Fall Preview - Get the scoop on Fall TV Shows
A corrupt and brutal L.A. detective runs an elite squad by his own rules in a neighborhood ravaged by drugs and gangs. Unusually gritty and graphically violent, but seldom less than riveting, 'The Shield' gets its biggest jolt from the breakout performance by Michael Chiklis as the complex and volatile Vic Mackey. The drama made Emmy history when he won for Lead Actor in a Drama in 2002, the first such win for a basic-cable series.
  • Critic's Notebook: Olympics Are Over, Back to TV | Roush Dispatch | 8/25/2008
Anyone else going through Olympics withdrawal? Mine started around the time the Olympic flame was extinguished during Sunday night’s broadcast of the closing ceremonies. I felt a sense of deflation as I watched replays of many of the games’ most thrilling moments. Also a sense of loss, even as I was being dazzled one more time by the pyrotechnics (presumably real) of the final spectacular, with a return of the drummers and gravity-defying performers amid a reprise, albeit on a somewhat smaller scale, of the human light show from the opening ceremonies, with shimmering movement and color holding us spellbound. (At least until the British showed up, with their tacky-by-comparison half-time-lite show. It’s going to be hard for anyone to measure up to China’s showmanship.)How am I going to fill my days and especially my nights now that I no longer have Bob Costas as my professional escort? What a great job he did as host and interviewer, always keeping his cool,... read more

Q: What do you think is the most underrated television show right now? Personally, I think it's The Shield. It is probably the most important show since The Sopranos, and I think it's nearly as good as The Sopranos. Without the success of The Shield, many cable dramas nominated for Emmys like Damages and Mad Men wouldn't have found a home on cable TV. It also helped show that innovative and original shows didn't just come from HBO or network TV. I think it has one of the best casts on ... read more
  • Mega Buzz on Housewives, House, Smallville & More! | Today's News: Our Take | 7/30/2008
Senior editors Matt Webb Mitovich and Mickey O'Connor answer your questions!I'm glad to hear that Desperate Housewives' Gaby is staying frumpy, if only for a bit longer. Any other scoop to share? — JillMatt: I almost forgot that I had gleaned this from my TCA party talk with exec producer Bob Daily (I blame my third Cape Cod...), but now here it is: Bree won't make do with just one kid for long. We will see Joy Lauren back as Danielle Van De Camp very soon — and not in flashback. At House's TCA session all I saw was Hugh Laurie, Robert Sean Leonard, Omar Epps and the "new team." Does that mean that Jennifer Morrison (Cameron) and Jesse Spencer (Chase) are no longer part of the show? — KerryMickey: Very observant, Kerry, but I'm told their absence is not significant. Both Morrison and Spencer remain series regulars. In fact, an upcoming ep promises to shed new light on the couple. Any romantic relationships for Dr. House this season? — StephanieMickey: There's a... read more

Q: What the heck is going on with FX? It's usually one of the best cable networks for summer television, but it seems the writers' strike has set them off course. I was first disappointed when the final season of the amazing show The Shield was pushed from spring to September. It doesn't make sense for them to do that when it was completed just as the writers' strike began, with plenty of time to spare to cut and edit the final episodes for a spring or summer release. I've heard the Olympics ... read more
  • The Shield Finale: "It's What Vic Mackey Deserves" | Today's News: Our Take | 7/15/2008
What's going to happen on the series finale of The Shield? Beats me, but check out these merciless teases from the show's cast and creator:"I was very concerned about ending it properly," says series creator Shawn Ryan. "To me, it feels like a graduation where you did well in school." Ryan tried to avoid writing an ending that departed radically from the show's essential character. "It will feel like The Shield," he says cryptically, mentioning that in preparation to end the crooked-cop drama, he studied the finales of shows that he admires, including The Sopranos' controversial fade to black."There will be no mixed reviews; you will get your money's worth," says David Marciano, who plays Det. Steve Billings, of the ending."I'm a chicken when I watch The Shield," says CCH Pounder, in direct contrast to her tough-as-nails character Det. Claudette Wyms. "But I think it's the greatest finale ever. This finale is what Vic Mackey deserves," she says with particular emphasis. "You will... read more
