For anyone reading between the lines, you could hear the writers responding directly to all of the viewer's criticisms over the last two seasons: "Look, we hear what you viewers have been saying. Question: I don't think you get it. Shonda Rhimes went to many media outlets (including TV Guide) and announced over and over again what the whole "for good" meant. She went into detail about how the strike made her come to this choice to end the on/off and how she sat both Dempsey and Pompeo down to talk about this and how happy they were with the story. Premise: Surgical residents at a Seattle teaching hospital hone their bedside manners on and off the job in this medical drama, which parlayed a cushy initial time slot (post-'Desperate Housewives') and a hefty dollop of sex and romance into immediate success. Indeed, in the opener, intern Meredith Grey sleeps with attending Derek ('McDreamy') Shepherd the night before starting work at Seattle Grace and discovers the next day that he's her boss. Their romantic ups and downs became the series' keystone.
