  • OK, I know you hate Blood ... | Matt Roush | 12/7/2007
Question: OK, I know you hate Blood Ties, but cut me some slack. It is my guilty pleasure, plus it is the best vampire show on right now. I noticed that the last two episodes of this season are only going to be shown on the Internet. Does this mean the show has been canceled or is it just fallout from the strike? Answer: Kim, you naughty thing, riling all of those Moonlight fans by calling this anemic pretender the "best vampire show" of the moment. Here's the situation, as explained by Lifetime: Blood Ties' companion shows, Lisa Williams: Life Among the Dead and America's Psychic Challenge (seriously, I'm not making up these titles), reached their season finales before Blood Ties did, so the network decided to air the remaining episodes online because the "Psy-Fridays" franchise was no longer intact. Which may not make much sense to fans but can be read as a lack of support for this show by the network. I'm told Blood Ties' fate hasn't been yet determined, but... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • I had a chance to watch the ... | Matt Roush | 10/15/2007
Question: I had a chance to watch the pilots for both Moonlight and Reaper. I'm a big Supernatural fan, and these ghost/vampire genre shows, when done well, are a lot of fun. To me, one of these shows demonstrates how you do it well, and one demonstrates how you do it badly. Let's start with the good: I really enjoy Reaper. The stars are likable, the writing is fun, and it genuinely made me laugh. It obviously isn't taking itself too seriously, but the effects are still nice and flashy, and let's face it: You couldn't ask for a more charming Satan than Ray Wise. I hope he gets more screen time. The creators obviously have a clear vision that the look, the music and the story all contribute to. I'll definitely keep tuning in. Now on to Moonlight — yikes! First of all, that voice-over. We get it, you're an angsty vampire. Shut up, already! I think the excessive VO makes the bad writing even worse. Because the writing is... read more be the first to leave a comment
  • I've read your column for ... | Matt Roush | 9/7/2007
Question: I've read your column for years and wanted to thank you for your sensible comments regarding Moonlight. I have decided that most genre fans are crazy and can see why it's so difficult to get a genre-type show to succeed outside of syndication these days. As a fan of Forever Knight and Angel, I was very excited when CBS announced that Moonlight would air in the fall. Thinking other fans would feel as I do about seeing another vampire grace our screens, I surfed a few sites. Well, I was met with cold water in the face and sometimes downright rudeness. Don't get me wrong, there are fans out there who are looking forward to Moonlight as much as I am. But it's amazing how people will cling to one show, even one that was canceled more than 14 years ago, to the exclusion of another that might be just as good. I find this mind-set incomprehensible, especially from a fan base that is supposedly progressive and open-minded. I hope your continued positivity toward Moonlight will help... read more be the first to leave a comment

  • When will we know if there ... | Matt Roush | 4/6/2007
Question: When will we know if there will be a new season of The Dresden Files? I've stopped watching Battlestar Galactica, but I never miss Dresden Files. Paul Blackthorne is so endearing as Harry Dresden. Answer: Generally, a show tends to wrap its first season before you get official confirmation of a second. Dresden wraps April 15, and in a release accompanying the season-finale screener, Sci Fi Channel notes that Dresden delivers more female viewers than any other current scripted Sci Fi original series. Which I take as a plus, because it seems to me the appeal of Dresden Files is in its charmingly disheveled hero. The appeal isn't universal, as witnessed by this response from Jill: "It's hard for me to understand your positive review of The Dresden Files and your negative comment regarding Blood Ties. Blood Ties has more of what I want in a series: a strong female lead, strong male leads who are also good-looking, and a great romance in its buildup phase. Dresden has...... read more be the first to leave a comment
