Hard-hatted woman: Lauren Holly and Greg Kinnear
starstarstarstar
Yuppie couple Danny and Jennifer Robertson (Greg Kinnear and Lauren Holly) -- he's a contractor, she co-owns an aromatherapy shop with flaky friend Nancy (Joan Cusack) -- want a baby, but have trouble conceiving. Eventually, Jennifer's obsession with baby-making and the couple's wacky experiences at a fertility clinic begin to drive a wedge between them, and Danny nearly succumbs to the predatory charms of an architect (Jill Hennessy) whose high-heeled legs represent a miraculous meeting of natural design and fashion engineering. This astonishingly inept romantic comedy ignores the most basic rules of character development, and demands that the Robertsons do and think things so stupid and venal that it's the next best thing to impossible to like or care about them. Most of the plot's comic contrivances rely on the hoary cliches of scheming wife vs. put-upon husband (no wonder Jennifer watches an episode of I Love Lucy with such rapt attention), though the fertility clinic scenes are predicated on the notion that queasy-making vulgarity is a laugh riot: Danny gets a proctological examination from beefy Nurse Wheeler (Marianne Muellereile), who later gives him a tour of the masturbatorium and its useful contents; Jennifer endures a series of artificial inseminations via ever-larger and more baroque medical instruments. It's hard not to think of DEAD RINGERS, a mirth-quasher if ever there was one. To top it all off, studio executive turned writer-director Keith Samples shows little understanding of pacing or directing actors, though he does demonstrate an admirable commitment to family: No fewer than nine Sampleses grace the credits. An eleventh-hour cameo by the uncredited Shirley Maclaine, playing Jennifer's salacious mother, represents a low-water mark in her recent career. --Maitland McDonagh
