Guerrilla filmmaker Kevin Smith returns to the junk-culture mileu of his first film, the no-budget, profanely funny CLERKS. Here, his snotty slackers have moved up in the world: Now they hang out at a real mall instead of a strip-mall convenience store. Starring skateboard pro Jason Lee -- making his movie debut -- and notoriously bratty Beverly Hills 90210 alumna Shannen Doherty, MALLRATS will appeal mostly to teenage boys who live for Star Trek trivia and bathroom humor. Promoted to a studio budget for his second outing, Smith brazenly ignores plot conventions and concentrates on an apparently endless stream of crude and occasionally clever one-liners.
