This hilariously deadpan performer seemed to come out of nowhere when he leapt to stardom in 2005. First he garnered raves (and a 2006 Golden Globe) as a clueless manager on the ensemble reality spoof The Offic... read more
  • Box Office Gets Smart, Doesn't Feel Love | Movie News | 6/22/2008
Steve Carell's Get Smart topped the weekend box office with a $39.2 million opening, well exceeding its hoped-for haul. Meanwhile, Mike Myers' The Love Guru — which was derided by at least one critic as "one of the worst films of the year" — fell way, way ("Way!") shy of projections, placing No. 4 with a mere $14 mil.Rounding out the weekend's top five were Kung Fu Panda ($21.7 mil), which I'm quite literally just about to watch with my sons at the Cape Cod Cinema; The Incredible Hulk ($21.6 mil, now just a few mil shy of the original Hulk's overall take) and The Happening ($10 mil). • Iron Man, Office Boss Among MTV Award Presenters | Movie News | 5/19/2008
Planning for the upcoming MTV Movie Awards is well underway, and some of the show's star presenters were announced Monday. This year's award-givers span the spectrum of stardom, and will include Lindsay Lohan, Steve Carell and Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr. Other big faves to appear include Jack Black, Megan Fox, Seth Rogen and Jennifer Hudson. At the top of this year's nominees (with the award being a "golden popcorn") are Superbad, with five noms and Juno, which has four. The awards are fan-driven, with voting open up until May 23, and the big show set to go down Sunday, June 1 on MTV (8 pm/ET). Will you be tuning in — or tuning out? Award shows, which have been the object of critcism as ratings decline, might still be viable when viewers have a say. But then again, Kenny Chesney, who's against fan voting (in country music, at least), has a point, too. • Finale Fever: The Critic's Notebook | Roush Dispatch | 5/19/2008
As the season rushes to a close, you win some, you lose some. Take Steve Carell, who got a bonus in Thursday’s finale of The Office (one of the rare hour-long episodes that didn’t wear out its welcome) with the arrival of Amy Ryan as new HR chief Holly. I’ll miss Toby, but for as long as she stays, she’s terrific. Two nights later, however, Carell presided over a miserably and all-too-typically unfunny season finale of Saturday Night Live—sparked only by two cameos by John McCain, spoofing his age (“the oldness it takes to protect America, to honor her, love her and tell her about what cute things the cat did”) and then during Weekend Update, satirically urging the Democrats: “Do not under any circumstances pick a candidate too soon.” When SNL sticks to politics, it’s generally pretty sharp. Otherwise, the eyes glaze, and not just because it’s past midnight. (Did enjoy Ricky Gervais’ droll bit, lording it over the American... read more
  • Episode Recap: Steve Carell Hosts, Usher Performs | Saturday Night Live | 5/18/2008
Hey guys, it's Erin Fox, back from vacation. Thanks so much to Adam Bryant for filling in while I was gone. We always have lively discussions about SNL on Mondays, so I knew he'd be a fantastic addition to the recap blog. Yay, Adam!So tonight is the season finale, and Steve "The Office and now big movie star" Carell is hosting. If I recall, last time he hosted wasn't all that phenomenal, but hopefully, that won't be the case tonight... especially with all the political fun to be had.Cold OpeningSteve starts off giving an address to some graduates from the "Pounder School." The name is awesome, even though I don't get the reference yet. He talks about how this school is for outsiders, that no one, regardless of background or funny sounding names would ever be made fun of... this is a family. Now he reads the names of the seniors, which is every name Bart Simpson would use to crank phone call Mo (and much dirtier ones). Some of my favorites, "Jack David Mehoff," "Lotta Christine... read more
  • Steve Carell's Office Preview: "Things Go Terribly Awry" | Party Central: The Latest Buzz from Your Favorite Stars | 3/10/2008
Steve Carell took some time out at the premiere of his new movie Horton Hears a Who! to chat about The Office's much-anticipated return. Filming on the NBC hit resumed March 6, and six episodes will round out this post-strike season. When asked about upcoming plotlines, Carell remarked, "The first [returning] episode is the one that was written previous to the strike. It involves Michael Scott having a dinner party for some of the couples in the office — and obviously things go terribly awry."Another bonus for Office fans, courtesy of Carell: The season finale will be an hour long. The Office returns April 10 at 9 pm/ET. — Summer Brooks read more
